Rann of Kutch is nearly expanded in 30,000 sq km area in Rann district and this area is divided in Great Rann of Kutch and Little Rann of Kutch. It is the largest salt desert in the world found between Gulf of Kutch and Indus  River. The Rann of Kutch is a geographically unique landscape that was once an arm of the Arabian Sea. As the land separated from the sea by geological forces, it became a vast, featureless plain encrusted with salt that is inundated with water during the rains. The area has a magnificent view of the sea on one side and deserts on the other. Great Rann of kutch is the north part of Rann and Little Rann of Kutch is in the south-east direction.

While here indulge in the cross-desert safari across the Little Rann of Kutch in open vehicles. The safari across the Little Rann visits the ‘bets’, islands on the ancient seabed that are now higher grounds covered with grass and scrub. These ‘bets’ support a variety of wildlife including the ‘Gudkhur’ (Asiatic wild ass) that is not found elsewhere. The wild ass is a handsome chestnut brown member of the Equus genus (horse family) capable of reaching high speeds when galloping. The wild ass is usually seen in small herds. The elegant blackbuck, nilgai or blue bull, chinkara (gazelle) are mammals seen at the bets. The main carnivores seen are the endangered Indian wolf, desert fox, Indian fox, jackals, desert and jungle cats, and a few hyenas. Smaller mammals like hares, gerbilles and hedgehogs, and reptiles like a spiny-tailed lizard, red and common sand boa, saw-scaled viper, cobra, dhaman (Indian rat snake), etc, can be during the safaris. You can also experience also unique dancing light which is visible at night and commonly known as Chir Batti. These unexplainable lights can be seen near Banni Grasslands.

Kutch is also home to numerous tribal groups, whose attire add a dash of color to the otherwise dull desert monotones. Many, such as the Rabari, are still nomadic and semi-nomadic pastoralists (who converge in the evening at a designated place, where the women would setup the tents and cook). As aptly endorsed by Amitabh Bachan for Gujrat Tourism ‘Kutch nai dekha to kuch nai dekha’. So reach Kutch by hiring a private vehicle or public buses from Bhuj which is 102 km away from Rann of Kutch. Or take a flight to Ahmedabad and travel to Dasada travel further to your destination. A tourist must carry ID-proof for safety all the time as Rann of Kutch is border area.
