MEN

Collaring the collar

Fashion designers over the past two years have been pushing menswear that fall somewhere in between work wear and casual wear, and adding more collar options along the way. The overall slimming down of the menswear silhouette calls for smaller collars.

New collar shapes and styles are in part due to revival of looks that has been out of fashion like the short collar.  Choosing the perfect collar style can feel a bit daunting. Here are some guidelines we generally stick with to help guys choose the right collar.

Spread collars

Spread Collars

As the name suggests, the spread, or distance between the collar points, is wider than usual. This type of collar should be worn with a larger necktie knot (full Windsor; Shelby knot) to fill in the space.  Men with longer face cut should opt for this collar. Round faced men can avoid this collar because this collar will make a large head look larger. Keep in mind that the collar should be proportionate to the individual’s face. Thin men, or men with thin faces, should go for a spread collar.

Forward point collars

Forward Point Collar

The forward point collar are one of the most classic and traditional pieces of formal and business menswear. By definition, a forward point collar has a much smaller distance between the points than other collar styles. As a result, the width of the collar appears thinner, especially near the points, although the length of the points remains unchanged. With this shape, the collar points are often left exposed, even with a jacket.   Such collars are best suited for smaller tie knot as they almost hide the upper part and the whole concentrations goes on the tie. For the round facial men, this is the best suited collars. If you have thin face then you should avoid this collar because it will only accentuate the features.

Cut-away collars

You can also wear it unbuttoned under your sport jacket or knit sweater for a more relaxed, yet sophisticated look. Team it with a nice tie to upgrade your overall dressing. Men with narrow face should opt for this kind of collar. Men who have round faces should avoid the cutaway collar.

Button down collars

The most distinctive quality of the collar is that they have button right under the collar point to give you the perfect firm height of the collar. For the most appropriate casual look you can carry this collar. It is least formal but you can pair it with a tie and jacket or casual suiting. A fundamental piece in every man’s wardrobe. This imparts a relaxed elegance, making it one of the most versatile collars.
